Johannesburg City Dynamics Day
Macroscopia Labs facilitated a workshop with 120 learners from Grade 6 to Grade 9 of Sacred Heart College. The theme of the one day workshop was centered on “Johannesburg Dynamics”. This workshop formed part of a larger project carried out by Urbanists for Equity and Sacred Heart College to look at options to influence positive change in the area where the school is located.
Participants were exposed to various city dynamics, and Yeoville in particular, through the use of visual arts, theatre and games. Learners participated in the activities as connoisseurs of Johannesburg, bringing their own personal knowledge to the group through their unique experience of the city. The objective of the activities was for learners to see themselves as active parts of this complex dynamic environment.
During the day, learners engaged in various activities to explore their school neighborhood as part of a city which is in itself part of a larger environment. Cities need to provide shelter, food, health, communication, trade among others and are complex organisms that have to constantly evolve with their inhabitants (e.g. migrations, food, waste, transport).
