Discover water and the land
Macroscopia Labs facilitated an interactive exhibit at the Department of Water Affairs for 150 school learners from across South Africa. The exhibit was an augmented reality sandbox that can be used to interact with the landscape and visualize how water moves across the land.
This exhibit design uses a concept known as “tangible computing” in which objects in the physical world can be manipulated to alter or operate a computer program, in this case a visualization of a landscape. It is a flexible educational tool that was used for learners to explore the importance of water, via lines of inquiry in hydrology, earth science, and environmental studies. By engaging in play with the sandbox, visitors were able to understand various concepts such as how the earth’s surface changes through natural processes like erosion and deposition or movement of water to developing an awareness of the catchment in which they live.
